Reimagining Fundraising First Edition: Finding the best ideas

The year 2020 brought about an unprecedented change in the private sector of fundraising like we
wouldn’t have dared to imagine. Fourteen international, non-profit organizations banded together,
united by a singular goal to “Reimagining Fundraising” for a more sustainable social impact across the world. Through crowdsourcing innovative ideas and proven concepts from ideators across the globe, we have collaboratively reinvented the way we do business…together…forever.

We built coalitions and shattered barriers reaching new milestones that effectively reshape an industry that has stagnated for years. Embracing collaboration was the key aspiration for Reimagining Fundraising.

We accomplished that together with the co-initiators and more than 1,500 participants
contributing to the challenge, generating more than 230 submissions from companies, start ups,
fundraisers and non- fundraisers. Submissions were evaluated by 113 industry experts nominated by
the co-initiating non- profit organizations. It took the dedication of over 200 volunteers supporting the initiative to make it the success that it was.

This challenge was open for submissions between 9th October – 8th November and was calling for both proven concepts and new ideas that are innovative, impactful, replicable and feasible for private-sector fundraising. Fundraising practitioners, NGOs, start-ups, consultants, agencies, academia and all types of companies were invited to contribute. Submissions went through expert evaluation and community voting in November 2020, and those shortlisted qualified to participate in a public online pitching session to a panel comprised of representatives from the co-initiators in mid-December 2020. The winning submissions were publicly recognized during the online ceremony, along with the chance to co-develop and test the submission with one or more of the listed co-initiators of this challenge. By the end of this global challenge, an Innovation Playbook (Manifesto) was created, which featured the highlights of this initiative and was shared with the participants in January 2021.

Reimagining Fundraising, the first Global Open Innovation Challenge for Fundraising, is co-initiated by a group of international non-profit organizations, including Action Against Hunger, Amnesty International, Care International, Greenpeace, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Plan International, Save the Children International, SOS Children’s Villages,  UNHCR the UN Refugee Agency, UNICEF, World Food Programme, World Vision International, and World Wildlife Fund (WWF). This initiative is powered by HYPE, a global leader in innovation ecosystem management software and services.
